The evolutionary history of an invasive species: alligator weed, Alternanthera philoxeroides

چکیده
The eco-evolutionary mechanisms of biological invasions are still not thoroughly understood. Alligator weed, Alternanthera philoxeroides (Martius) Gisebach (Amaranthaceae), is a plant native to South America and a weed in Australia and other countries. To better understand its success as an invader, we assessed the morphological and cytogenetic variability of 12 Argentine populations and the cytogenetic variability of seven Australian populations. We found differences in leaf shape (width-tolength ratio) and stem architecture in the Argentine populations, in reproduction (sexual with regular meiosis in two Argentine populations vs completely asexual with irregular meiosis and low pollen viability in all other populations) and ploidy level (tetraploids with sexual reproduction and seed production vs hexaploids with or without sexual reproduction). We propose a hypothesis about the mechanism that drove alligator weed to form highly invasive hybrid populations with vegetative reproduction from diploid ancestors, and we consider the implications for plant–herbivore interactions and biological control of this weed.

Invasion of alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) in Wular Lake, Kashmir, India
Alligator weed Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb (Amaranthaceae) is being reported for the first time from Kashmir, India. Alternanthera philoxeroides was collected in 2008 during the vegetation survey of Wular Lake, a wetland of international importance under Ramsar convention. Alternanthera philoxeroides is a noxious invasive weed widespread throughout the world. We suggested that al...

Flea beetles of alligator weed, Alternanthera philoxeroides (Martius) Grisebach (Amaranthaceae), were collected in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil. Species in the genera Disonycha Chevrolat, Agasicles Jacoby, Systena Chevrolat and Phenrica Bechyné were frequently found on this weed. Phenrica littoralis (Bechyné) was the most abundant within this genus. The male is described and the hol...
متن کاملManagement of aquatic alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) in an early stage of invasion
Alligator weed Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. is an amphibious plant that aggressively invades aquatic and terrestrial environments. It has invaded at least 14 countries and is difficult to control. The present study investigates the effectiveness of herbicides and physical removal in eliminating patches of aquatic alligator weed in an early stage of invasion. This paper firstly de...

The largest known infestation of alligator weed Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. in Victoria, Australia, was reported in January 2009 in an urban pond. To determine how long the infestation had been present, high quality digital aerial images (orthophotos) were gathered for the site. Since all infestations are subject to ongoing eradication programs in Victoria, historical orthophoto...

Biological invasion has become a serious global environmental problems and been considered as an important component of global change. Invasions by alien species can have an impact at several levels of ecological complexity from genes to ecosystems. Invasive alien species had seriously threated the biodiversity and natural ecosystems in China, and caused economic losses by more than US$7 billio...
